Prototype Open 25.1

The 2025 CrossFit Open is off and running, and Week 1 has already given us a solid challenge. From the Farmer's Carry to the workout itself, the energy in the gym has been awesome, and it’s clear that this year’s Open is going to be one to remember.

The Challenge
Let’s start with challenge #1. We kicked off with the Farmers Carry, asking athletes to carry 75% of their body weight. While it wasn’t the flashiest challenge, it was undoubtedly tough. There was no hiding here—either you carried the weight or you didn’t. But everyone gave it their all, and that’s what counts.

The 25.1 Workout

Then came the workout. 15 minutes. As many rounds and reps as possible.

  • 3 Lateral Burpees over the Dumbbell
  • 3 Dumbbell Hang Clean-to-Overheads
  • 30-foot Walking Lunge (2 x 15 feet)

*After completing each round, add 3 reps to the burpees and hang clean-to-overheads. ♀ 35-lb (15-kg) dumbbell ♂ 50-lb (22.5-kg) dumbbell

The burpees were brutal, but they set the tone for what was to come. Those dumbbell hang clean-to-overheads? You felt every rep, especially as the rounds started adding up. The walking lunges may have been the only saving grace. Despite the legs starting to really feel the burn, they at least they gave everyone a brief moment to catch their breath before diving into the next set of burpees and clean-to-overheads. By the end of the 15 minutes, it was less about speed and more about pacing—finding that rhythm between the explosive moments and the longer, endurance-driven movements. Every round built on the last, and it wasn’t just a test of strength, but mental toughness too. Great job to everyone for pushing through!

Team Standings

Now, let’s get to the real fun. With 4 teams in play, the competition is heating up, and the energy in the gym is infectious. Here are the current standings after Week 1 of the Open:

What stands out most about Prototype is the camaraderie. The members, especially in the 7AM and Noon classes, create a great balance of fun and focus. Everyone is friendly and supportive, but when it’s time to work, people take the WODs seriously and push themselves to improve. That combination can be hard to find. All the coaches play a huge role in setting that tone. My favorite moments are the everyday ones i.e. showing up, putting in the work together, leaving class feeling accomplished. What I look forward to most is continuing to train alongside people who genuinely enjoy the process and want to get better. “Because summer’s coming.” Who at Prototype has made the biggest impact on you and why? As a dad of two young daughters, the people who’ve made the biggest impact on me at Prototype are the women in the gym. They all train with confidence, strength, consistency and set a powerful example. It’s the kind of environment I hope my daughters grow up seeing where strength is normal and earned. What are your hobbies and activities outside the gym? I dabble a bit in photography, star gazing and love to travel. Playing atrocious golf. How has Prototype helped you or solved a problem for you? Prototype has helped me stay active. There’s a real sense of happiness and accomplishment after each workout, and that feeling has become addictive in the best way. Knowing I’ll leave class feeling stronger, physically and mentally, keeps me coming back. Prototype has turned working out from something I should do into something I genuinely want to do, which has made a huge difference in maintaining a sustainable fitness routine. What are your current fitness goals? Steady progress and longevity. If I can keep lifting, moving well, and feeling good years from now, I’ll consider that a win. I hope my future self will thank my present self. Favorite Quote If you can’t explain it simply you don't understand it well enough.
