The Prototype HYROX Series — Part 1

HYROX 101: The Fastest-Growing Fitness Sport in the World

What it is, where it came from, how the race actually works — and exactly how to train for your first one.

If you’ve been on fitness TikTok in the last year, you’ve seen it. People sprinting between sled pushes and wall balls in massive arenas, lights flashing, crowds screaming. That’s HYROX — and it’s exploded from a niche German fitness experiment into one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet.

Prototype Training Systems is an official HYROX Training Club — one of a global network of affiliated gyms recognized by HYROX. That means we have the equipment, the programming, the affiliate-only race intel, and a coaching staff that’s been preparing athletes for this format for years. On Saturday, June 27th, we’re hosting our own Partner HYROX Simulation right here at the gym — the perfect first race for anyone curious about the sport.

This post is your starting line. Whether you’re HYROX-curious, intimidated, or already plotting a race in Boston this October, here’s everything you need to know.

Section 01

So What Exactly Is HYROX?

HYROX (pronounced HY-rocks ) is an indoor fitness race. Every event, in every city in the world, follows the exact same format:

8 Runs. 8 Stations. 1 Time on the Clock.

Run 1km → complete a workout station → repeat 8 times. The order never changes. The format never changes. The clock doesn’t stop.

That standardization is the genius of it. Just like a marathon is 26.2 miles whether you run it in Boston or Berlin, a HYROX is a HYROX anywhere on Earth. Your time in Westborough can be compared directly to someone’s time in Stockholm, Singapore, or Sydney. There’s a real global leaderboard. There’s a real World Championship. And there’s a real path from your first race to the top.

Average finish time across all competitors is right around 90 minutes. There are no time caps. No qualifications to enter. No surprise workouts. You know exactly what you’re training for — which is exactly why it’s grown so fast.

Section 02

From a Hamburg Warehouse to a Global Movement

HYROX was launched in 2017 in Hamburg, Germany by Christian Toetzke (a sports event organizer) and Moritz Fürste (an Olympic gold medalist in field hockey). Their idea was simple: build a race anyone could enter like a marathon, with functional fitness movements like CrossFit, in a globally standardized format that lets results be measured and compared across the world.

The first event drew a few hundred people. Here’s where it’s gone since:

2017 First HYROX event held in Hamburg, Germany
2019 First U.S. race in Miami
2023 175,000 racers across 65 events worldwide; 24,000 in London alone
2024 5,000+ affiliated gyms worldwide — Prototype is one of them
25/26 Over 1,000,000 athletes raced; only top 0.5% qualified for World Championships

The 2026/27 season hosts more than 50 events across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and the Middle East — on every continent except Antarctica. PUMA, Red Bull, and NYU Langone Health are now title sponsors. The PUMA HYROX World Championships return to Europe in June 2026, taking over the brand-new Strawberry Arena in Stockholm.

Section 03

The 8 Stations — In Order, Every Time

Between every station, you run 1km. The station order never changes. Here’s the exact sequence with Open Division weights:

01

1000m Ski Erg

Sets the tone. Full body, smokes the lungs early. Pace it.

02

50m Sled Push

Heavy. Legs go to jelly fast. Short, hard pushes beat one long grind.

03

50m Sled Pull

Hand-over-hand rope pull. Grip and posterior chain take over here.

04

80m Burpee Broad Jump

The midpoint heartbreaker. Athletes love it — eventually.

05

1000m Row

Halfway home. The legs are gone, so the engine has to carry you.

06

200m Farmers Carry

53lb / 35lb kettlebells. Grip is shot — just keep walking.

07

100m Sandbag Lunges

44lb / 22lb sandbag on your back. This one breaks people.

08

100 Wall Balls

20lb / 14lb to a 10ft / 9ft target. Finish line is right there. Go.

The Roxzone

The transition area between every run and station is called the Roxzone. The clock keeps running here too. Beginners lose massive time here without realizing it. Sharp Roxzone transitions are one of the cheapest ways to drop your overall time.

Section 04

Singles, Doubles, Relay — Pick Your Lane

HYROX has four ways to race the same workout. The format is identical — what changes is who’s doing the work.

Singles — Open

You vs. the workout, solo, standard weights. The most popular division and the right starting point for almost everyone.

Singles — Pro

Same race, heavier weights. The path to qualifying for Regionals and the World Championships. Earned, not chosen casually.

Doubles

Teams of 2 (Men’s, Women’s, or Mixed). You run every 1km together , and split the work at each station however you want. The single best on-ramp to the sport.

Relay (Team of 4)

Each teammate runs 2 x 1km and does 2 stations. Perfect for first-timers, friend groups, and corporate teams.

Coach’s Take — How Doubles Actually Works

In Doubles, only one partner is working at a station at a time. You can swap as often as you want — whoever’s faster on a given movement does more reps, the other rests. Done well, this is a strategic chess match. Done poorly, you’re just standing around. The teams that win don’t have the strongest individuals — they have the best plan.

Where to Race Next — The 2026/27 U.S. Calendar

The biggest U.S. season in HYROX history is loaded onto the calendar. Boston is the obvious one for us — here are the events most relevant to Prototype athletes:

The Big One · Drive 35 Minutes

HWPO HYROX Boston

October 8–11, 2026 · Boston, MA · 4-day race weekend

Amazfit HYROX Washington D.C.

Affiliate Perk

As a HYROX Training Club, Prototype gets guaranteed early access codes for major U.S. races — usually 48 hours before the general public. Boston, Tampa, Denver, and Dallas all sell out fast. If you want one of those races, train with us and you’ll get the code straight from coaching staff before public sale.

Section 06 · The Best On-Ramp

Your First Race Should Be Here — June 27th at Prototype

On Saturday, June 27th from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, we’re running a full Partner HYROX Simulation at the gym. Three divisions: Male, Female, and Mixed teams. You and a partner share every station and run every 1km together — same official format you’d see at any HYROX event in the world.

It’s the perfect first race. You get the timing chip, the heat schedule, the leaderboard, the screaming crowd — without the travel, the pressure, or the price tag of a major event. And you find out what you’re actually capable of.

The Full Workout · Partner Format

01. 1000m Ski Erg (split)

02. 1km Run (together)

03. 250ft Burpee Broad Jump (split)

04. 1km Run (together)

05. 1000m Row Erg (split)

06. 1km Run (together)

07. 500ft Farmer’s Carry (35/53 lb · split)

08. 1km Run (together)

09. 250ft Weighted Walking Lunges (26/60 lb · split)

10. 1km Run (together)

11. 100 Wall Ball Shots (10/14 lb · 9/10 ft · split)

Walking is permitted on the runs. Each station is shared by the pair, so no one completes the full workload alone.

Both partners must register individually. Questions? Email [email protected] or grab a coach at the gym.

Section 07 · Train For It

Two Sample HYROX Workouts You Can Run This Week

HYROX training is a blend of three things: aerobic engine, muscular endurance under load, and the ability to switch between running and lifting without falling apart. Below are two starter workouts — one for someone brand new to the sport, and one for someone gearing up for the June 27th sim.

Workout 1 · The HYROX Curious

“Mini HYROX”

For: someone new to fitness racing. Goal: feel the format. ~25–35 minutes.

For Time:

400m Run → 250m Ski Erg

400m Run → 20 Air Squats (sub for sled push)

400m Run → 10 Burpee Broad Jumps

400m Run → 250m Row

400m Run → 50m Farmer’s Carry(light DBs or KBs)

400m Run → 20 Walking Lunges(no weight)

400m Run → 25 Wall Balls(light)

Why It Works

It’s a true HYROX in miniature — same exact movements, same order, scaled distances. You’ll feel the pacing challenge of switching from running to a station, then back to running, without breaking yourself.

Workout 2 · The First-Timer

“Race Pace Builder”

For: someone training for the June 27th sim or their first official race. Goal: build the engine. ~40–55 minutes.

5 Rounds For Time:

800m Run(steady race pace)

500m Row@ moderate pace

15 Wall Balls(20/14 lb)

10 Burpee Broad Jumps

Then, Immediately:

200m Sandbag Carry(heavy) + 200m unweighted Lunges

Why It Works

The repeated run-row-station combo trains the exact transition fatigue you’ll feel on race day. The sandbag/lunge finisher trains the back-half of HYROX, where most first-timers fall apart. Run the runs at your honest race pace — not a sprint, not a jog.

Section 08 · The Prototype Way

How We Train HYROX Athletes at Prototype

As an official HYROX Training Club, we’ve built an entire pathway around the sport. Three different ways to train with us — pick the one that fits where you are right now.

Option 1

Group Classes

Our daily class programming already builds the exact engine HYROX rewards — running, ergs, sled work, carries, wall balls. You don’t need a special program to get HYROX-fit at Prototype. You just need to show up consistently.

Option 2

Individual Program Design

A custom training program built specifically for your race goal — whether that’s the June 27th sim, Boston in October, or qualifying for Worlds. We assess where you are, identify your weak links, and give you a week-by-week plan you can run on your own schedule.

Option 3

Personal Coaching

One-on-one sessions with a coach to dial in technique on the specific HYROX movements — sled push form, wall ball efficiency, sandbag carries, transitions. The fastest way to drop time is to fix what’s costing you minutes.

Not sure which one fits? Talk to any coach at the gym — we’ll point you the right way.

Build It Here. Then Race It Anywhere.

June 27th at Prototype is your starting line. Boston in October is your stage. Whether you race once or chase the World Championships, the path starts with one Saturday morning.

A note on how this post was built: as part of how we run Prototype, we use AI tools to help research, draft, and shape educational content like this — pulling together public race data, our own affiliate intel, and coaching experience to deliver useful breakdowns to members faster. The HYROX format details, race calendar, and June 27th workout are pulled from official HYROX sources and our internal coaching plans. The Prototype perspective is our own.
