CAROLINA LUCCHESE

Fighting Back for Her Health

Carolina Lucchese at Prototype Training Systems

The first time I really understood Carolina Lucchese's story, it wasn't because of a number on a board or a max lift. It was a sentence she said about the moment she decided to walk through our doors: she could either let Crohn's define her, or she could fight back.

She chose to fight back. And almost everything in her life changed because of it.

Carolina was born in Brazil and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was seven years old. A few years later, she lost her father. What she remembers most from those years is watching her mother become a real-life superhero — raising three daughters in a foreign country while teaching them discipline, hard work, and perseverance. There wasn't money or time for organized sports or fitness. So exercise was simply never part of Carolina's life.

Years later, she walked into Prototype at one of the hardest points she'd faced as an adult. She had recently been diagnosed with Crohn's disease. She was carrying an extremely stressful situation at work. And she was watching her husband consistently make fitness a priority — which made her want something better for herself, too.

"My hope wasn't to become an athlete or hit some specific number on a scale. I simply wanted to become healthier so I could be there for my family — physically, mentally, and emotionally."

That's the part I want you to sit with for a second. Carolina didn't come in chasing a sport. She came in looking for structure, accountability, and a place outside of her home where she could focus on her health. She wanted to feel stronger. She wanted to live a fuller, more active life. She wanted to be there for her people.

What surprised her most was how fast things moved. Within a year, Carolina says her Crohn's disease was in remission. She gained confidence. She found the strength to leave an unhealthy work situation. She became more present for her family. The changes weren't just physical — they reached into every part of her life.

Carolina Lucchese and her husband

Carolina and her husband — whose own commitment to fitness first inspired her to want more for herself.

About six months in, one of our coaches, Jon, walked up to her and said something she'll never forget: "Carolina, do you realize that six months ago you couldn't do an air squat, and now you just completed an entire workout with multiple air squats?"

"That simple comment meant everything. It made me feel seen. It reminded me how far I had come when I was focused on how far I still had to go."

CrossFit isn't easy when you're starting from scratch. That moment gave her the motivation to keep showing up — and she's been showing up ever since.

The reason Carolina found us in the first place is a name some of you will recognize: her cousin, Bonnie Santiago. Bonnie looked incredible, loved this place, and spoke highly of all the coaches — Brian especially. Carolina understood why immediately. As a beginner, it's easy to feel intimidated or anxious before a workout. Brian has a way of bringing calm and reassurance to the room, a coaching style that makes you feel like you'll figure it out no matter where you're starting from. (The reggae during warmups doesn't hurt, either.)

Then there was the small thing that wasn't small at all. On a family vacation for her daughter's 15th birthday, Brian took the time to send her a birthday message and wish the family a great trip. A tiny gesture — and exactly the kind of thing that told Carolina this wasn't just a gym. It was a community that genuinely cared about its members and their families.

Today, Carolina trains four to five days a week. Workouts that once left her dizzy, nauseous, and overwhelmed are now challenges she completes with confidence. More importantly, she trusts her body in a way she never did before.

And here's what "starting from scratch" actually looked like in the numbers. In her first weeks with us, Carolina back squatted 35 pounds. Today she's hit 155. Her deadlift has climbed to 195. Her front squat went from 55 pounds to 137. None of that happened overnight — it happened across more than a thousand sessions, one honest rep at a time.

But here's what I love most about her story. When Carolina thinks about what her life would look like if she'd never walked through our doors, she doesn't just think about herself. Because she and her husband embraced an active lifestyle, they've influenced their two kids, her sisters, their families — even her mother — to move more and live healthier.

"The impact has spread far beyond me. I'm genuinely convinced that without Prototype, my family would not be as healthy or active as we are today."

Seven years later, Carolina says she's the healthiest she's ever been — even healthier than she was before her Crohn's diagnosis. Her body composition scans over the years have confirmed what she already feels: stronger, healthier, more capable. But beyond any number, she'll tell you Prototype gave her something more valuable — confidence, resilience, friendships, and a community that helped her become the best version of herself.

Why She Trains

"To be there for my family — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Taking care of myself is how I take care of everyone who depends on me."

Mike's Note

Carolina came to us as a beginner during one of the hardest seasons of her life — and she'll be the first to tell you she never set out to become "an athlete." She just wanted her health back. Seven years and more than a thousand sessions later, she's stronger than she was before her diagnosis, and she's pulled an entire family into a healthier life behind her.

What a lot of people don't know is that I get to train right alongside Carolina at many of our 12pm classes. I've gotten to interact with her, chat, get to know her — and watch how she works. One thing stands out: she is incredibly coachable. She's often the person Coach Brian will have demonstrate a movement, or point to as an example of doing something well. As a coach, those are the people you want — the ones who genuinely want to get better, who give you feedback, who let you know what's going on, because we want to help. Carolina is amazing, and I'm so happy we have her in this Prototype community. Now we just need to get her cousin Bonnie back in. :)

Does this sound like you?

Maybe you never grew up playing sports. Maybe a diagnosis, a stressful stretch of life, or just the years getting away from you have left you feeling like a gym isn't for "someone like me." Maybe you're watching a spouse or a friend prioritize their health and quietly wishing you could, too. Carolina felt all of that — and she started anyway. You don't have to be at your healthiest to begin. You just have to begin.
